DUBAI MARATHON IN SIGHT - SPONSORING PARALYMPIC ATHLETE CALLUM HALL
300 North are delighted to be sponsoring Paralympic Athlete Callum Hall. Callum is 26 years old and originally from Yeadon in West Yorkshire. He was paralysed in September 2012 after stepping on a sea urchin in Greece. This caused an epidural abscess on his spine and resulted in paraplegia. Callum was passionate about sport, being a PE teacher and playing football before his accident. He took up wheelchair racing in 2014 after hearing about it from ex patients at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.
Callum competed in his first major event earlier this year where he was one of 18 para athletes to represent England in the 2018 Commonwealth games on the Gold Coast. A brilliant result where he came 7th in the marathon. In 2017 Callum took part in the Boston, New York and London Marathons and won bronze at the 2016 Great North Run.
We're confident that Callum has a bright future ahead, particularly with further support to help with his training before upcoming races in 2019 and beyond.
Talking about his training, Callum says "I am currently within a heavy winter training block, which consists of 2 training sessions per day, 6 days a week. This includes endurance sessions along the main roads of up to 30 miles, interval sessions, lots of hill climbing (which we're not short of in Yorkshire!) and strength sessions in the gym. As a full-time athlete, training does not stop after exercise, nutrition is key and sticking to a solid plan to keep fuelled for sessions and recovering afterwards is essential. Winter training is my favourite time of year as you get to put in the real hard work and push yourself to the limit. This does however mean that recovery sessions are essential, so I receive weekly soft tissue massages to try and put everything back into place".
Wheelchair racing is an equipment-based sport and Callum needs to replace some Carbon Fibre wheels, a broken pair increases rolling resistance so having the best equipment possible has a huge impact on performance.
He goes on to explain that "During the winter we are prone to more punctures as the road surfaces deteriorate, this means tyres also need replacing frequently. A lot of support is needed during the season and I am so glad 300 North have agreed to sponsor me and help me throughout this season, it really will help to make a difference to my progression".
The Dubai marathon in January is Callum's next major race and we are looking forward to seeing the improvements in his performance after winter training and seeing how far he can progress in 2019. Good luck Callum from all of us at 300 North.
